In the world of prisons, the goal used to be to reform people who had gone wrong in life, and release them back into society in a better condition and better equipped to make it in the law-abiding world. In the late seventies and early eighties, though, these goals were largely abandoned in favor of segregating evil-doers from the rest of society. KQED blog author, Katrina Schwartz, shows us how art is being integrated into the entire school curriculum in a few pilot programs in a high poverty school area. Instead of being a luxury relegated to that lonely classroom far down some lonely labyrinth, and often cut from the budget completely for less fortunate kids, art is now welcomed into the math and science classes as a motivator. As a result of this experimental program (whereas only 17% of third graders were proficient in math five years earlier), the math proficiency of the students rose to an AMAZING 66%!

What Twins Teach Us about the Growth Mindset

Pick up your FREE copy of #1 Best Seller "Unbelievable Me" on Kindle/Kindle App (for all devices) July 29-31, 2016.

Using studies of twins in different environments, modern scientists have shown time and time again that environment plays a major role in determining IQ. When genes are basically removed from the equation, researchers know that most differences in development can be attributed to the environment each individual is exposed to. Psychological experiments have also shown that even if people have certain propensities and predispositions for various mental illnesses, the environment is a big factor in determining if the illnesses will actually develop. So the answer to the age-old nature/nurture question has been answered: it’s a combination of both.

That’s good news for educators, and people who have the growth mindset have known this all along. Shouldn’t everyone’s potential be nurtured rather than just the ones who show a high potential on a test? The main idea is that everyone has an innate genius or innate special abilities that can be accessed, developed and utilized if they know how to do so. This is where the environment can be a very influential factor in determining ability.

People with the growth mindset can learn to tap their own resources and to increase their abilities and potential. Teaching something in the right way under the right conditions can allow everyone to adopt the growth mindset and be able to solve problems and achieve goals. So incorporating the growth mindset in educational settings is the preferred method.

Increase Productivity with the Growth Mindset and Meditation

A day has only twenty four hours, but the tasks that we need to accomplish are many. Spending the whole day attending to those tasks, and even extending to the better part of the night, can greatly hinder your productivity and may not even result in achievement of the task at hand. Overextending yourself can leave you exhausted and unmotivated, and can even affect your health overall.

Fortunately, experts in psychology give us several options for making your brain more creative and productive in order to achieve our goals in less time (such as those listed in Entrepreneur Magazine). Of course, when you have the fixed mindset, it can be hard to imagine becoming creative in ways you never have been creative before, or being more productive than ever before. That’s why the growth mindset is a key component of the personal development process. With the growth mindset, you'll be able to adapt more productive habits, one of which of course being meditation.

Meditation will help you to focus on coming up with ways to be more creative and productive. To achieve this, you are advised to take a break from those activities which might be overwhelming you, do something that will uplift your mind and soul. You will leave the meditative session with a clear mind, and will be in a position to come up with solutions which are more creative and productive. At all times we are advised to avoid procrastination: it not only delays completion of tasks but also leads to other bad habits, which greatly impede our productivity and self-awareness.

Improving productivity and self-awareness is a conscious action, one that an individual has to work on consistently and in a committed manner. Maintaining self-awareness will give rise to good habits and further personal growth.

How the Growth Mindset Can Help America Grow

Psychology Today blog author, Ray Williams, tells us that people in the US have become less educated over the years. To substantiate this claim, he points out that the entire education system in the U.S. has fallen behind those of other developed countries. “The World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. at 52nd among 139 nations in the quality of its university math and science instruction in 2010. Nearly 50% of all graduate students in the sciences in the U.S. are foreigners, most of whom are returning to their home countries”. Plus, we now have fewer younger college graduates than we’ve had in the past.

The story behind the story on the lackluster performance of US students is that there is a big gap between students that live in poorer areas versus ones that live in wealthier areas. This is largely because the US is one of only a few countries that continues to contribute more resources to schools in wealthier areas, which is further evidence that most of us have the fixed mindset. You see, people with the fixed mindset believe that successful kids only come from successful households. So if you’re poor, there’s no point in allocating funds to teach you because you probably won’t make it anyway.

The more people learn to adopt the growth mindset, though, the more likely we will be to allocate the proper resources to all students. This is what the better-ranking countries do. They recognize the potential in all kids, and they are able to tap into it. Only then will we be able to improve our own rank among the rest of the developed countries of the world.
